Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Health Sciences Faculty, Department of Social Work organized a conference celebrating March 18, World Social Work Day, which was globally observed under the theme "Strengthening Intergenerational Solidarity for Sustainable Well-being."

The event, held at the Health Sciences Faculty Conference Hall, was attended by the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mahmut Yaran, members of the Samsun branch of the Association of Social Workers, academics, and students.

The conference featured Betül Turan Esen, a Social Worker from the Samsun Yeşilay (Green Crescent) Counseling Center (YEDAM), who delivered a presentation on "Addiction and Social Work in Addiction Treatment."

"The Role of Social Workers Must Be Strengthened"

In the opening speech, Prof. Dr. Gülsüm Çamur emphasized the significance of social work in addressing global risks, stating:

"Today, economic, environmental, social, and political risks deeply affect individuals and societies, further highlighting the importance of the social work profession. Social workers play a leading role in addressing these issues, empowering individuals, and contributing to developing more resilient communities. Intergenerational solidarity is critical for sustainable well-being, social cohesion, and integration. Therefore, the role of social workers must be strengthened, and social policies that enhance this solidarity should be widely implemented."

"We Aim to Strengthen Both Professional Development and Intergenerational Solidarity"

Gökhan Yanar, Board Member of the Samsun Branch of the Association of Social Workers, underlined that social work focuses not only on individuals but also on the well-being of generations, families, and communities. He stated:

"As the Samsun Association of Social Workers, we aim to strengthen professional development and intergenerational solidarity through research projects, field studies, and joint training programs in collaboration with universities. Ensuring that young social workers enter the profession well-equipped is a key factor directly impacting the quality of life of the individuals we serve."

Meanwhile, the Social Work Department Head, Prof. Dr. Ercümend Ersanlı, stressed the importance of addressing social issues such as addiction when striving for sustainable well-being and emphasized the need for effective solutions.

"Change Means New Habits and a New Life"

Following the opening remarks, Social Worker Betül Turan Esen provided valuable insights into the role of social work in combating addiction:

"At YEDAM, we support individuals in overcoming addiction to alcohol, drugs, gambling, and the internet, helping them reintegrate into life, improve their quality of living, and adapt to social life. In this process, clinical psychologists and social workers collaborate to offer free psychosocial support to individuals struggling with addiction. Change means adopting new habits and building a new life. Social workers do not aim to offer addicted individuals a completely different world but rather seek to create support mechanisms that make their existing world more livable. Those needing assistance can contact YEDAM by calling the 115 helpline."

At the end of the conference, Dr. Lecturer Aynur Arslan presented Betül Turan Esen with a bouquet and a certificate of appreciation for her contributions.

To conclude the program, the Samsun branch of the Association of Social Workers held a raffle, distributing gifts such as mugs, tote bags, and calendars to students.
