Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Turkish Language Teaching Application and Research Center (OMU-TÜRKÇE) organized a vibrant Nevruz celebration, attended by Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Çetin Kurnaz, Secretary General Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erhan Pancar, faculty members, and students.
The event, which attracted significant interest from international students studying at OMU, particularly those from Turkic nations, commenced with Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın lighting the traditional Nevruz fire. A symbolic iron forging ceremony, representing the legendary emergence from Ergenekon in Turkic history, was performed. Additionally, wheat grains were scattered onto the earth as a gesture of prosperity and abundance.
OMU-TÜRKÇE Director Prof. Dr. Serkan Şen presented Semeni, a symbolic representation of rebirth and growth, to Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın. One of the most cherished Nevruz traditions, the egg-tapping contest, was also held. Additionally, students reenacted Samsun’s unique "Çiğdem Çiçek" ritual, where they distributed crocus flowers while reciting traditional rhymes and requesting gifts from faculty members.
In keeping with Nevruz’s significance as a time of renewal and fresh beginnings, participants wrote their hopes and wishes on colorful notes and hung them on the Wishing Tree. Meanwhile, students and administrators jumped over the Nevruz fire, sharing their aspirations for the coming days.
At the closing of the event, Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın expressed her delight in celebrating Nevruz and emphasized its role in fostering unity:
"Nevruz is a meaningful festival that brings together different cultures, reinforcing the spirit of brotherhood and solidarity. I take great joy in preserving our traditions while strengthening our unity. I wish this new day brings health, peace, and prosperity to all of us."
The event, marked by joyful traditions and cultural festivities, concluded with participants leaving with colorful memories and shared experiences.
