Student Innovation Shines at OMU Engineering Faculty Project Exhibition

The graduation projects of the students from the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department of Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Engineering Faculty were exhibited.

Innovative Projects on Display

At the exhibition held in the faculty building, various tools and devices designed by the university students to make human life more accessible were displayed. Speaking to AA correspondent, the Dean of the Engineering Faculty, Prof. Dr. Yıldıray Topçu, stated that 40 projects were showcased in the graduation project exhibition.

Highlighting that 20 of the exhibited projects participated in TEKNOFEST and TÜBİTAK competitions, Topçu said, "We provide project-based engineering education. Therefore, in all our departments, students are encouraged to write projects and participate in project competitions through entrepreneurship, innovation, and sector-on-campus programs."

From Theory to Practice

Head of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department, Prof. Dr. Hülya Gökalp Clarke, mentioned that their students had the opportunity to apply the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills they acquired at the university in their own projects in the final year, thus increasing their interest in the profession.

"There are interesting projects in the exhibition," said Clarke, adding, "There are projects such as a robot dog, a smart campus, signal generators, location detection, and detecting living beings under rubble. All of these are practical, need-based projects. Therefore, exhibiting the work they have been engaged in for a year brings them great excitement."

Innovative Solutions for Real-World Problems

Electrical and Electronics Engineering student Yunus Saim Aslan, who designed a robot to detect living beings in building rubble with his friend Volkan Coşkun, pointed out, "The sound system can make noises inside the rubble to detect living beings. We have a thermal camera module for those who cannot make sounds." Aslan also mentioned that they control the robot via a Bluetooth connection on a phone and can watch the live footage from the robot.

Elif Ezgi Nur Güney, along with her friend Gökçe Yılmaz, emphasized that their project, which monitors transformer conditions, measures the temperature of the transformer remotely using sensors. "Transformers convert the generated electrical energy to the electricity level we use in our homes. We want to monitor the parameters of this transformer. We want it to operate at the appropriate temperature. Therefore, we measure its temperature, current, and voltage. We can detect faults early with our developed system, thereby minimizing maintenance and repair costs," she explained.
