International Black Sea Conference on Language and Language Education is held at OMU

1st International Black Sea Conference on Language and Language Education hosted by Ondokuz Mayıs University was held at OMTEL Hotel on September 22-23 with the theme of "New Trends in Language Education" and with the participation of domestic and foreign guests.

The conference was organized for the first time in the Black Sea region with the support of OMÜ Project Management Office. Prof. İsmail Hakkı Mirici (Hacettepe University), Prof. Abdulvahit Çakır (Gazi University), Prof. Belma Haznedar (Boğaziçi University) and Assoc. Prof. Ayşegül Amanda Yeşilbursa were invited to the program as keynote speakers. The conference was held with the participation of Vice Rector Prof. Vedat Ceyhan, David Fay, Education Attaché of the United States of America, Prof. Rıfat Günday, Head of Foreign Language Education in the Faculty of Education, Assoc. Prof. Nalan Kızıltan, Director of the School of Foreign Languages, Project Coordinator Asst. Prof. Emrah Ekmekçi, Project Coordinator Asst. Prof. İsmail Yaman, academicians, teachers, researchers and students.

“The conference will reach different cities”

Project Coordinator Asst. Prof. İsmail Yaman and Project Coordinator Asst. Prof. Emrah Ekmekçi gave the opening speech, and they explained the purpose of the conference as "gathering the academicians, teachers, graduate students and researchers interested in language and language education by means of an international academic activity". They also expressed that the conference was held in the Black Sea Region for the first time. Yaman and Ekmekçi stated that they planned to organize this conference later in Sinop and then in Rize, and that they were carrying out preliminary studies for the series of conferences.

Asst. Prof. İsmail Yaman and Asst. Prof. Emrah Ekmekçi expressed their gratitude to the academicians who enriched this activity with their efforts and presentations.

Then Assoc. Prof Nalan Kızıltan, Director of the School of Foreign Languages, thanked the Rectorate contributing to the organization of the conference, Asst. Prof. İsmail Yaman and Asst. Prof. Emrah Ekmekçi who organized the activity, and the guests enriching the conference with their ideas and presentations.

Vice Rector Prof. Vedat Ceyhan expressed his happiness for the fact that the university held such an activity, and he pointed out that discussions on numerous languages would provide a stimulating perspectives for further studies, and that great contributions could be made on the education by means of following the developments in the world on the issue of language teaching and sharing these developments with the educational sector.

After the opening speeches, Prof. İsmail Hakkı Mirici, guest academician from Hacettepe University, made his presentation entitled "Common Practices in the Field of European Criteria-Based Language Education", and he shared the impacts of the updated programs on language teaching and philosophy in Turkey.

After speeches, Prof. Rıfat Günday presented the certificate of attendance and the plaque to Prof. İsmail Hakkı Mirici, academician at Hacettepe University while David Fay, Education Attaché of the United States of America, received his certificate and plaque from Assoc. Prof. Nalan Kızıltan.

The conference continued with the keynote speeches of Prof. Abdulvahit Çakır (Gazi University), Prof. Belma Haznedar (Boğaziçi University) and Assoc. Prof. Ayşegül Amanda Yeşilbursa (Uludağ University).

About 180 domestic and foreign academicians participated in the 1st International Black Sea Conference on Language and Language Education and about 160 presentations were delivered. The conference provided a good opportunity for exchanging information and ideas among the participants for 2 days at OMTEL hotel.

On the second day of the conference, concurrent presentations were concluded, and Samsun Metropolitan Municipality sponsored the visits to Steamer Bandirma Museum and the newly-opened Samsun Panaroma Museum.
