OMU Ranks Among World’s Top Universities in THE Impact Rankings 2025

Times Higher Education (THE), one of the most prestigious global university ranking organizations, has announced the results of its 2025 Impact Rankings.

Based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the rankings assess universities’ contributions to society in areas such as health, food, ecology, and education. According to the results, Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) has once again achieved a major success by ranking in the 801–1000 band globally for the fifth consecutive year.

OMU improved its performance in 7 categories and ranked in all 15 SDG categories it participated in for 2025.

The THE Impact Rankings 2025 cover 2,526 universities across 130 countries and regions. OMU scored above the global average in the following categories:

  • Zero Hunger
  • Good Health and Well-being
  • Clean Water and Sanitation
  • Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
  • Climate Action
  • Partnerships for the Goals

OMU earned a general score of 61.1 out of 100, placing it in the 801–1000 band among 2,318 universities in the overall ranking.

Breakdown of SDG Categories:

SDG 1 – No Poverty

Sustainable Development Goal 1: "No Poverty" focuses on the efforts and research conducted by universities in tackling poverty and providing support to impoverished students and communities within their respective regions.

Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) participated in this category, which evaluated 1,267 universities from 111 countries and regions.

In this assessment, OMU achieved a commendable ranking between 801–1000, attaining a score of 35.6.

This recognition highlights OMU's commitment to addressing poverty-related issues and implementing initiatives to alleviate poverty.

SDG 2 – Zero Hunger

Sustainable Development Goal 2: "Zero Hunger" examines universities' research endeavors concerning hunger, their educational programs focused on food sustainability, and their dedication to combating regional hunger and reducing food waste.

Within this category, a total of 955 universities from 97 countries and regions were evaluated. Türkiye was the most represented country in this SDG, with 63 universities ranked.

OMU excelled in this domain, securing a remarkable ranking between 301–400 with an impressive score of 51.6.

This achievement underscores OMU's significant contributions to advancing knowledge on hunger-related issues and promoting sustainable practices in the realm of food production and consumption.

By actively engaging in research, educational initiatives, and community outreach, OMU showcases its commitment to making a tangible impact in critical areas such as poverty eradication and hunger alleviation. SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being

Sustainable Development Goal 3: " Good Health and Well-Being" evaluates universities' research efforts in addressing major diseases, their contributions to the healthcare sector, and the support provided to students and staff regarding their health and well-being.

Within this category, a total of 1,788 universities from 119 countries and regions were evaluated. Türkiye led the category with 103 ranked universities.

OMU demonstrated its dedication to this critical area by securing a ranking between 601–800, with an impressive score of 53.3 points.

This recognition highlights OMU's commitment to advancing knowledge in healthcare, supporting the healthcare sector, and promoting the well-being of its students and staff.

SDG 4 – Quality Education

Sustainable Development Goal 4: "Quality Education" assesses universities' contributions to lifelong learning, pedagogical research, and their commitment to inclusive education.

A total of 1,975 universities from 127 countries and regions participated in this category's evaluation.

OMU showcased its commitment to excellence in education by securing a ranking between 1001–1500, scoring 37.5. This achievement emphasizes OMU's dedication to providing quality education, promoting inclusive learning environments, and advancing research in the field of pedagogy.

By excelling in the areas of health and quality of life, as well as quality education, OMU reinforces its commitment to societal progress and sustainable development. These accomplishments reflect the university's efforts to contribute to advancements in healthcare, promote well-being, foster inclusive education practices, and positively impact individuals and communities.

SDG 5 – Gender Equality

Sustainable Development Goal 5: "Gender Equality" evaluates universities' research endeavors focused on gender equality, their policies to foster an inclusive environment, and their determination to empower women in the workforce.

Within this category, a total of 1,559 universities from 119 countries and regions were evaluated.

OMU's commitment to promoting gender equality is evident as it participated in this assessment and achieved a ranking between 1001–1500, with a score of 36.3 points.

This recognition highlights OMU's ongoing efforts to advance gender equality, empower women, and create a more inclusive and diverse university community.

SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation

Sustainable Development Goal 6: "Clean Water and Sanitation" assesses universities' research initiatives on water resources, usage, and commitment to sustainable water management practices.

Within this category, a total of 1,042 universities from 97 countries and regions were evaluated.

OMU's dedication to addressing water-related challenges and ensuring sustainable water management is demonstrated by its ranking between 301–400, with a notable score of 51.5 points. This accomplishment emphasizes OMU's contributions to research and practices promoting clean water availability and sustainable sanitation.

OMU's participation and performance in the categories of gender equality and clean water and sanitation reflect its commitment to sustainable development and its proactive approach to addressing critical global challenges.

Sustainable Development Goal 7: "Affordable and Clean Energy" evaluates universities' research initiatives in the field of energy, their energy consumption patterns, policies, and their commitment to ensuring and promoting energy efficiency for all.

A total of 1,181 universities from 105 countries and regions were assessed in this category.

OMU's dedication to advancing energy-related research and practices is evident as it achieved a commendable ranking between 601–800, with a score of 41.1 points.

This recognition underscores OMU's efforts to promote affordable and clean energy solutions, contribute to sustainable energy practices, and address the global energy challenge.

SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth

Sustainable Development Goal 8: "Decent Work and Economic Growth" examines universities' economic research, employment practices, and the proportion of employed students.

Within this category, a total of 1,350 universities from 109  countries and regions were evaluated. Türkiye had the highest representation with 67 universities.

OMU's commitment to fostering economic growth and decent work opportunities is reflected by its ranking between 601–800, with a score of 53.0 points, highlighting its contribution to research and practices that promote sustainable economic development and employment.

SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

Sustainable Development Goal 9: "Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure" assesses universities' research in the areas of industry and innovation, their contributions to patent filings and spin-off/independent companies, as well as the research income generated from collaborations with the industry.

Within this category, a total of 1,156 universities from 105  countries and regions were evaluated. Türkiye led the category with 84 ranked universities.

OMU's dedication to fostering industry, innovation, and infrastructure is evidenced by its ranking between 401-600 and a score of 52.0. This recognition emphasizes OMU's contributions to advancing research in industry-related fields, promoting innovation, and driving regional and national development through collaborations with the industry.

OMU's performance in the categories of affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, and industry, innovation, and infrastructure showcases its commitment to sustainable development and its contributions to addressing key global challenges. OMU strives to positively impact energy, economic growth, and innovation for a better future by conducting impactful research, implementing sustainable practices, and fostering collaboration with industry partners.

SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities

Sustainable Development Goal 10: "Reduced Inequalities" evaluates universities' research efforts in addressing social inequalities, their policies to combat discrimination, and their commitment to employing and empowering personnel and students from underrepresented groups.

Within this category, a total of 1,261 universities from 110 countries and regions were evaluated. Türkiye was the most represented country in this SDG, with 81 universities ranked.

OMU's commitment to promoting inclusivity and reducing inequalities is evident as it achieved a ranking between 601-800, with a score of 44.7 points.

This recognition highlights OMU's dedication to conducting research, implementing policies, and creating an inclusive environment that empowers individuals from diverse backgrounds and ensures equal opportunities for all.

SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities

Sustainable Development Goal 11: "Sustainable Cities and Communities" assesses universities' research on sustainability, their role as custodians of art and cultural heritage, and their internal approaches to sustainability.

A total of 1,154 universities from 98 countries and regions were evaluated in this category. Türkiye had the highest representation with 69 universities.

OMU's contributions to promoting sustainable cities and communities are reflected in its ranking between 601–800, accompanied by a score of 35.5 points. This accomplishment underlines OMU's commitment to research and practices that foster sustainability, preserve cultural heritage, and contribute to the development of sustainable communities.

OMU's participation and performance in the categories of reduced inequalities and sustainable cities and communities further demonstrate its dedication to sustainable development and its role in addressing social challenges. OMU strives to create a more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable society for all by conducting impactful research, implementing inclusive policies, and promoting sustainability in various aspects.

SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production

Sustainable Development Goal 12: "Responsible Production and Consumption" evaluates universities' efforts in promoting responsible consumption and their approaches to the sustainable use of natural resources.

Within this category, a total of 973 universities from 91 countries and regions were evaluated. Türkiye led the category with 70 ranked universities.

OMU's commitment to responsible production and consumption is evident as it ranked between 601–800, scoring 46.0 points. This recognition highlights OMU's efforts to promote sustainable practices, advocate for responsible consumption patterns, and address the environmental impact of production processes.

SDG 13 – Climate Action

Sustainable Development Goal 13: The “Climate Action” assesses universities' research on climate change, their energy usage patterns, and their preparedness activities to combat the consequences of climate change.

A total of 1,089 universities from 105 countries and regions were evaluated within this category. Türkiye was the most represented country in this SDG, with 64 universities ranked.

OMU's dedication to climate action is reflected in its ranking between 401–600, with a score of 41.7 points. This achievement emphasizes OMU's contributions to climate change research, its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and its preparedness in tackling climate-related challenges.

OMU's participation and performance in the categories of responsible production and consumption and climate action further underscore its commitment to sustainable development and addressing pressing environmental issues. By promoting responsible consumption, advocating for sustainable resource management, and actively engaging in climate change research and mitigation strategies, OMU aims to positively impact the environment and contribute to building a sustainable future.

SDG 16 – Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions

Sustainable Development Goal 16: "Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions" assesses universities' research contributions to peace and justice, their policies on academic freedom, and their involvement as consultants in governance institutions related to these issues.

Within this category, a total of 1,265 universities from 113 countries and regions were evaluated. Türkiye had the highest representation in this SDG, with 75 universities.

OMU's dedication to promoting peace, justice, and strong institutions is evident as it ranked between 601–800, scoring 44.1 points.

This recognition highlights OMU's research endeavors in these areas, its commitment to academic freedom, and its engagement in supporting governance institutions for peace and justice.

SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals

Sustainable Development Goal 17: "Partnerships for the Goals" examines universities' support for global partnerships, their promotion of best practices, and their publication of data related to sustainable development goals in a comprehensive manner.

Within this category, a total of 2,389 universities from 127 countries and regions were evaluated. 

OMU's commitment to fostering partnerships for sustainable development is reflected in its ranking between 601-800, with a score of 68.8 points. This accomplishment emphasizes OMU's efforts to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, share knowledge, and promote sustainable development practices to achieve global goals.
