A Taste of Tradition: OMU Celebrates Turkish Coffee through Intercultural Dialogue with Students

Included in the "Intangible Cultural Heritage" list by UNESCO in 2013, Turkish coffee continues to be celebrated every year on December 5 as "World Turkish Coffee Day." This special day was marked with a meaningful event organized by the Ondokuz Mayıs University Turkish Language Teaching Application and Research Center (OMÜ-TÜRKÇE).

The event saw the participation of OMU Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın, who joined international students to celebrate the occasion.

During the program, international students studying at OMÜ-TÜRKÇE were introduced to the rich culture of Turkish coffee. The historical background of Turkish coffee, its preparation, and the symbolic meanings it carries in its presentation were shared with participants. Alongside Turkish coffee, the students were also served traditional Turkish delight, offering them a chance to experience a deep-rooted tradition of Turkish culture.

Throughout the event, students observed the process of making Turkish coffee firsthand, learned coffee brewing techniques, and witnessed cultural nuances such as coffee reading (fortune-telling). Furthermore, the aspect of Turkish coffee as a symbol of friendship and sharing in social life was demonstrated practically to the participants.

At the end of the program, participants shared their impressions and learnings about Turkish coffee culture, expressing their appreciation for OMÜ-TÜRKÇE's efforts in promoting Turkish culture on international platforms.

Meeting with international students during the event, Rector Aydın remarked, “Today, on World Turkish Coffee Day, we honor the history of this ancient beverage and raise awareness for its continuation into the future. Turkish coffee continues to present a part of our culture to coffee enthusiasts worldwide. We hope coffee lovers use this special day to discover this cultural treasure over a cup of coffee.”

Speaking during the event, OMU Turkish Language Teaching Application and Research Center Director Prof. Dr. Serkan Şen emphasized, “Turkish coffee is not just a beverage; it is an essential part of our culture. We are delighted to introduce this value to our students through this event.”

OMÜ-TÜRKÇE’s meaningful organization was highly praised for fostering intercultural interaction among students and spreading the tradition of Turkish coffee to broader audiences.
