The Department of Mathematics and Science Education at Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Faculty of Education celebrated March 14, Pi Day, with an event attended by a wide range of participants.
The event, coordinated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Esen Ersoy, welcomed academicians as well as 5th, 6th, and 7th-grade students from various districts and schools in Samsun.
Opening the event, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Esen Ersoy emphasized the importance of encouraging students to develop an interest in mathematics and stated:
“In this program, which we prepared together with our valued students, we organized activities such as the history of Pi, a Pi dictionary, and a competition for memorizing the decimal places of Pi. Our goal is to teach the famous mathematical constant Pi to students in a fun and engaging way.”
One of the most exciting moments of the event was the Pi Digits Memorization Contest, where students from different schools competed.
• Dila Ataseven, a student from OMU Foundation College, won first place by memorizing 208 decimal places of Pi.
• Kuzey Gürel from Samsun Mafen Schools secured second place with 186 digits.
• Gülersu Aybüke Gürdil came in third by memorizing 139 digits.
The top-ranking students received their medals from Assoc. Prof. Dr. Esen Ersoy. The Pi Day celebration at OMU successfully promoted a greater interest in mathematics while providing students with both an educational and enjoyable experience.
