Ondokuz Mayıs University Turkish Language Teaching Application and Research Center (OMU-TÜRKÇE) organized an iftar dinner for international students who have come to the university to learn Turkish. The event, held at OMU Life Center, introduced students to traditional themes of Ramadan culture in Türkiye.
Speaking after the iftar, OMU-TÜRKÇE Director Prof. Dr. Serkan Şen addressed the guests, emphasizing the significance of cultural exchange alongside language education:
“While teaching you Turkish at our institution, we also strive to introduce our culture and ensure that you create beautiful memories of Turkish hospitality and tolerance. Our goal is to support you in continuing your education or professional life as a friend of Türkiye. Ramadan is a sacred time of spiritual peace in these lands. Humanity needs such moments of compassion and reflection to build a more conscious world. Otherwise, the inhumane scenes recently witnessed in Palestine will continue to repeat before our eyes. Today, we have gathered here thanks to Ramadan. I hope all our gatherings take place around such meaningful occasions. Thank you all for joining our table.”
Following Prof. Dr. Şen’s speech, students from the Turkish Language and Literature Department gave a presentation on traditional Turkish folk plays. This was followed by a Hacivat and Karagöz Shadow Play, which the attendees received with great interest.
As part of Turkish hospitality traditions, the “diş kirası” (tooth rent) tradition was exemplified, where guests were treated to “atom,” a local Samsun delicacy associated with Ramadan.
The iftar program concluded with a group photo session, capturing the spirit of cultural unity and friendship.
