A Tribute to Legends: OMU Hosts the 2nd International Congress on Exercise and Sports Sciences

Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) hosted the "2nd International Exercise and Sport Sciences Congress" in collaboration with Selçuk, Ordu, Sinop, and Giresun universities. The congress is dedicated to the memory of world and Olympic weightlifting champion Naim Süleymanoğlu and the late Prof. Dr. Ahmet Faik İmamoğlu. The first congress was held in honor of world and Olympic champion Yaşar Doğu and the late Prof. Dr. Mehmet Yalçın Taşmektepligil.

The congress, which will run for three days, brings together prominent figures in the world of sports. The opening ceremony featured the attendance of legendary weightlifter and three-time Olympic champion Halil Mutlu.

Vice-Rector Kesten: “Naim Süleymanoğlu Introduced Weightlifting to the Turkish People”

Speaking at the opening held at OMU Atatürk Congress Center, OMU Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Alper Kesten emphasized that research in sports sciences should aim not only to enhance athletic performance but also to promote healthier individuals.

Highlighting Naim Süleymanoğlu’s significant role, Kesten stated, “Naim Süleymanoğlu introduced weightlifting to the Turkish public and won their hearts. He brought immense joy and pride to our nation by becoming a three-time consecutive Olympic champion in one of the most challenging sports. Today, we honor his memory with great respect. I warmly welcome Halil Mutlu, another outstanding athlete who carried the torch and achieved three consecutive Olympic gold medals in Atlanta, Sydney, and Athens.”

Congress President Çankaya: “We Aim to Receive Constructive Feedback”

Congress President Prof. Dr. Soner Çankaya shared that the congress hosts scientists from 21 countries who will present 146 papers. He stated, “This congress offers a unique opportunity to deepen our understanding of how sports sciences shape healthy living and human performance. We aim to present and discuss recent research, track developments, and receive constructive feedback in the field of sports.”

OMU Yaşar Doğu Faculty of Sport Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. Murat Eliöz expressed gratitude to the participants for attending a congress dedicated to two significant figures in Turkish sports history.

Halil Mutlu: “Two Elder Brothers Who Made Me Love Sports and Education”

During his presentation, former national weightlifter Halil Mutlu shared personal memories of Naim Süleymanoğlu. He said, “As a young man, I dreamed of meeting Naim Süleymanoğlu. In 1991, I realized that dream. We traveled together, participated in the same competitions, and spent nearly 24 hours a day together for 27 years. He holds a special place in my life. Remembering Naim Süleymanoğlu and Prof. Dr. Ahmet Faik İmamoğlu, I am grateful to the two elder brothers who inspired my love for sports and education.”

Inspiring Future Generations in Sports Education

The Congress also delved into the contributions, vision, and academic legacy of Prof. Dr. Ahmet Faik İmamoğlu in the field of sports education.

At the end of the program, certificates of appreciation were presented to the speakers, followed by a group photo session.

The "2nd International Exercise and Sport Sciences Congress" will continue until December 7, 2024.
