Thousands Gather in Samsun to Mark 101 Years of the Turkish Republic

On October 28 at 1:30 PM, the 101st anniversary celebrations of Türkiye’s Republic Day began in Samsun with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Atatürk Monument. Following this solemn ceremony, thousands of enthusiastic citizens participated in the Republic March, which started at the Monument of Honor and concluded in Republic Square.

The wreath-laying ceremony at the Monument of Honor was attended by Samsun Governor Orhan Tavlı, Garrison Commander Veteran Davut Âlâ, Deputy Mayor of the Metropolitan Municipality Nihat Soğuk, Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın, OMU Secretary General Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erhan Burak Pancar, district mayors, members of the Samsun protocol, and many local citizens.

After the wreath-laying ceremony, Governor Orhan Tavlı signed the Book of Honor.

In a statement, OMU Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın expressed, “On this meaningful day celebrating the 101st anniversary of our Republic, we remember with respect, gratitude, and reverence the founder of the Republic of Türkiye, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and his comrades-in-arms. Guided by the principles of independence and modernity, which are the greatest achievements of our Republic, we remain committed to fostering future generations filled with hope. We continue our determined efforts to guide our nation toward a brighter future through science and education. As Ondokuz Mayıs University, we work tirelessly to uphold and advance the values entrusted to us, as embodied in Atatürk’s proclamation of the Republic as his ‘greatest work.’”

Rector Aydın concluded her remarks by stating, “With heartfelt reverence, I commemorate our Republic’s founder, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, as well as our martyrs and veterans. I warmly congratulate every individual in our country on the 29th of October, Republic Day.”
