The 2024 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings results have been announced, assessing universities worldwide on criteria such as environmental sensitivity, energy and climate change, waste management, transportation, and sustainability. Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) rose 83 places to become the "281st Most Sustainable Campus in the World." Hosting an eco-conscious campus life harmonious with nature, OMU ranked 25th among Turkish universities.
In the 2024 rankings, which evaluated 1,477 universities from 95 countries, OMU’s achievement stood out. The university has steadily increased its efforts in sustainability, taking significant steps toward becoming a greener, more environmentally friendly campus.
OMU ranked 519th in 2021, 469th in 2022, and 364th in 2023. This year, the university advanced by 83 positions to secure the 281st spot.
Among European universities, OMU ranked 81st out of 340 universities, marking a noteworthy accomplishment by providing environmentally friendly living facilities for its students, staff, and academics.
OMU continues to climb the national rankings. According to 2021 and 2022 GreenMetric data, the university ranked 41st in Türkiye. It rose to 33rd place in 2023 and further climbed 8 positions in 2024 to secure 25th place.
While 71 Turkish universities participated in the 2021 GreenMetric rankings, this number increased to 83 in 2022, 98 in 2023, and 120 in 2024.
In the 2024 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, the top three universities worldwide were: Wageningen University in the Netherlands, Nottingham Trent University in the United Kingdom, and Groningen University in the Netherlands, respectively.
Among Turkish universities, Istanbul Technical University ranked 38th globally and first in Türkiye. Yıldız Technical University ranked 59th globally and second nationally, while Cyprus International University ranked 64th globally and third in Türkiye.
OMU Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın shared her thoughts on OMU’s success in the 2024 GreenMetric rankings:

In recent years, we have implemented numerous eco-friendly projects on our campus, such as expanding green spaces, ensuring energy efficiency, waste management, and water conservation. This significant advancement highlights the environmental awareness of both our university and all stakeholders. GreenMetric is a ranking system established by The University of Indonesia in 2010 to raise awareness about global climate change, energy and water conservation, waste recycling, and green transportation. By collecting data annually from universities worldwide, GreenMetric evaluates universities' environmental sustainability and policies. Rankings are based on a single score reflecting efforts to enhance sustainability through eco-conscious projects and programs.
