The Veterinary Faculty Education, Research, and Application Hospital at Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) in Samsun provided healthcare services to 4,000 animals in the first three months of 2025. Serving as the only public animal hospital in the Black Sea Region, the facility actively attends to stray and wild animals in addition to pets.
Between January and March 2025, of the 4,000 animals admitted to the hospital, 300 were stray animals, and 50 were wild animals. The hospital handled 700 emergency cases during this period and performed surgical procedures on 300 animals.
The OMU Animal Hospital has been operating on a 24-hour basis since November 2017. The number of patients and operations performed at the hospital has increased steadily each year. In 2024, the facility treated 34,000 animals and carried out 1,600 surgeries.
Recently introduced advanced technological equipment at the hospital accelerates treatment processes and offers veterinary students modern educational opportunities. This new equipment includes a 16-slice computed tomography (CT) scanner, a C-arm fluoroscopy device, an electrochemotherapy unit, and a low-dose laser therapy device.
The computed tomography scanner provides imaging services not only to animals brought directly to the hospital but also to those referred from neighboring provinces. The C-arm fluoroscopy allows minimally invasive orthopedic surgeries, significantly reducing operation times and speeding up recovery periods.
The low-dose laser therapy is effectively used for pain management, dermatological conditions, wound healing, and inflammatory diseases. Additionally, the electrochemotherapy device enhances treatment outcomes for soft tissue tumors while minimizing chemotherapy side effects.
