The "Young Academician and Artificial Intelligence Workshop," organized by Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) in partnership with Young Academia, was held successfully. The event, which took place at the Atatürk Congress and Culture Center, saw the participation of OMU Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Sevim Alışır and Prof. Dr. Murat Terzi, Young Academia President Dr. Ömer Yazıcı, Vice President and Lecturer Dr. İsmail Gürler, along with numerous academics and students.
As part of the Young Academia Regional Meetings, young academicians were given enlightening seminars on artificial intelligence under the motto "Meet, Connect, Publish." The workshops allowed participants to discuss innovations and developments in the field of artificial intelligence. The event, aimed at bringing together researchers from different disciplines, was attended by 109 academicians.
Speaking at the event, Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Murat Terzi emphasized that artificial intelligence demonstrates proficiency in all aspects. "With the advent of the internet, a global network of connections has started to form. Advances in technology allow us to access information much more quickly. This situation also facilitates our academic life. It used to be difficult to publish, but now we can access publications easily and quickly. In my field of neuroscience, numerous publications were made with artificial intelligence between 2020 and 2023. Currently, artificial intelligence is showing its presence in every field," he stated.
Terzi continued: "Twenty universities were selected to open associate degree and undergraduate programs in the field of artificial intelligence, with a total of 12 associate degree and five undergraduate programs to be launched. Inspired by these developments, we will all proceed with more motivation and illuminate the future. At OMU, we closely follow the advancements in artificial intelligence and are determined to support the work of academicians and students in this field.”
Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Sevim Alışır mentioned that the academic world would evolve alongside artificial intelligence, stating, "We are together to advance further in the academic world by working together to discover and develop new ideas. By welcoming innovation, we are fully confident that we will achieve great success together."
Young Academia President Dr. Ömer Yazıcı, in his presentation, introduced Young Academia and discussed its activities, stating, "We have set our primary goal to be a distinguished platform with academic prestige and international competence. In this platform, named Young Academia, we offer the opportunity to receive the necessary training for the academic community and to improve yourselves. We aim to organize a symposium specifically for graduate students in September and October. Our 'Young Academicians' meetings were attended by visionary speakers from the president of TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) to members of the Council of Higher Education. While many foundations and associations exist, our goal here is to nurture the professors of the future."
During the event, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Faruk Aylar from the OMU Faculty of Human and Social Sciences Geography Department gave a seminar on "Artificial Intelligence in Social Sciences," and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Serhat Odabaş from the OMU Bafra Vocational School of Plant and Animal Production spoke on "Artificial Intelligence in Science and Engineering Fields." After the seminars, all participants came together in the "Future of Artificial Intelligence and Ethics Workshop."
