The “Graduate – Student Meeting” started by Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Alumni Coordinatorship has been held in the conference hall of the Faculty of Science and Letters with the collaboration of the Department of History.

Academicians and a great number of students attended the event where Samsun Uğur Schools Director General Davut Numanoğlu also participated as guest speaker.

Delivering the opening speech of the meeting, Çarşamba Humanities and Social Sciences Faculty Dean Prof. Rıza Karagöz shared information about the back-story of Davut Numanoğlu and wished a successful meeting for the students.

Having graduated from OMU Department of History in 1990 and given 27 years of service to the educational sector, Samsun Uğur Schools Director General Davut Numanoğlu said that they wished to open a new window to the life of students expressing his impressions on education.

"We have to create an objective and healthy assessment-evaluation system"

Pointing out the deficiencies in the education system in Turkey, Davut Numanoğlu also stated that one of the biggest problems in the Turkish education system is faced in the assessment and evaluation part. Underlying that due to this deficiency new assessment and evaluation systems are tested continuously, Numanoğlu continued “There is an evaluation system called PISA which enables assessment prejudice-free and according to universal criteria such as assessing the perception capacity and/or using knowledge. To create a healthy system we should also use these criteria as base”.

"Our hard infrastructure is good but we lack qualified teachers"

Stressing that another problem in the Turkish education system is faced in the learning and teaching models, Davut Numanoğlu stated “We have no problems in the hard infrastructure. We are indeed ahead of many European schools in this regard. Our problem is the lack of qualified/idealist teachers. Many teachers learn the profession after actually having started to work through trial and error, however until getting learned they negatively affect the lives of many students. Please bear in mind that in education you can’t go back and repair errors. We have to update the educational policy and work together to overcome these problems.”

Pointing out the necessity to create an educational policy which reflects national and common values and raises global citizens, Davut Numanoğlu shared their experiences gained in management and life.

Answering questions after their speech, Samsun Uğur Schools Director General Davut Numanoğlu was presented a sapling certificate.
