Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) commemorated its 50th anniversary and Ramadan feast with a meaningful celebration. The reception and Ramadan feast gathering, held at the OMTEL Hotel, attracted significant attention from the university community.

Academic and administrative staff gathered at the event

The event was attended by OMU Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın, Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Çetin Kurnaz, Prof. Dr. Alper Kesten, Prof. Dr. Ayşe Pınar Sumer, General Secretary Prof. Dr. Erhan Burak Pancar, along with academic and administrative staff and students.

After a concert by the marching band, attendees cut the 50th-anniversary cake, celebrating both the university's deep-rooted history and the joy of gathering for the Ramadan feast. The program concluded with an unforgettable musical performance by the OMÜKAM Women’s Choir Orchestra.

Rector Aydın: “OMU is a respected and strong higher education institution”

In her speech, Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın highlighted OMU’s growth since its establishment on April 1, 1975, when it began its educational journey with just 50 students. She noted that the university's foundations were laid by Samsun Faculty of Medicine, established under Hacettepe University in 1973, and summarized the subsequent establishment of other faculties and the university's regional influence:

“The Faculty of Science and Engineering was founded in 1975, followed by the Faculty of Agriculture in 1976, and the Faculties of Education and Theology joined in 1982. In 2006 and 2007, certain units separated from our university, leading to the establishment of new universities in Amasya, Ordu, and Sinop. The final link in this chain was the establishment of Samsun University in 2018.”

“We are determined to become a research university”

Emphasizing OMU’s continued growth through visionary leadership, Rector Aydın made the following remarks about the university's developmental journey:

“Our university holds significant potential with over 6,000 academic and administrative personnel and nearly 50,000 students. With its faculties, vocational schools, institutes, research centers, technopark, and healthcare facilities, OMU continues its determined journey that was initiated 50 years ago. This heritage places great responsibilities upon us, and we carry forward our work fully aware of these responsibilities.”

Concluding her speech, Aydın wished everyone a happy Ramadan feast and expressed hopes that the 50th anniversary would bring health, peace, and success to the university community and Türkiye as a whole.

The program ended with a commemorative photo

The reception concluded with attendees taking a group photo. The event represented OMU’s pride in its past and hope for the future.
