The 57th Infantry Regiment’s Battle Standard, which was entrusted to Ondokuz Mayıs University by Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University last month, was presented to Rector Prof. Sait Bilgiç in the ceremony of 19 May Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day held by the Governorate of Samsun.
Tayyip Abdullah Telli and Köksal Terzi, the students of the OMU Student Council, to whom the standard was previously entrusted, presented the 57th Regiment’s Standard to Rector Bilgiç in the celebration ceremony organized in front of Samsun Governorate.
Tayyip Abdullah Telli, a student at OMU, made a speech in the ceremony, and he stated: “This sacred flag is handed over from university to university each year in order to transfer it from generation to generation. This year, the duty of sentry for 57th Regiment’s Standard is given to Ondokuz Mayıs University. We are proud and honored to deliver our Standard to our Rector Prof. Sait Bilgiç”. Then Tayyip Abdullah Telli and Köksal Terzi presented 57th Regiment’s Standard to Rector Prof. Sait Bilgiç.
Rector Prof. Sait Bilgiç delivering the 57th Regiment’s Standard by kissing it gave a speech, and he remarked: “19th May enthusiasm has come to a peak with the delivery of 57th Regiment’s Standard. We have received the standard, which is the symbol of our heroes who wrote the heroic legend with great honor. With the standard we receive, we know the importance of our responsibility, and we will fulfill it. The Dardanelles Victory, which was an inspiration for the War of Independence beginning on May 19, 1919, is of course a heroism we will be proud of. But this is not enough. We should take lessons from those days. We should find a way to become heroes without dying or killing.
We should transfer this homeland, left by the heroes who lost their lives without blinking their eyes in their early years to deliver this land, to the next generations, in a beautiful form in which they can live proudly and in a civilized manner. As Ondokuz Mayıs University, we are aware of this fact. We have promised to cooperate in any kind of initiatives to be taken for the development of our country”.
