With the permission of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, scientific excavations at Parion Ancient City, led by Prof. Dr. Vedat Keleş, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU), have reached their 19th year with the 2023 season.

For years, excavations have been conducted in the village of Kemer in the Biga district of Çanakkale with the aim of uncovering the historical and archaeological heritage of Parion Ancient City. The excavation team includes faculty members from the Department of Archaeology at OMU, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kasım Oyarçin, Dr. Alper Yılmaz, and Research Assist. Soner Özmen, along with undergraduate and graduate students.

Teams from various national and international universities are also involved

In addition to the OMU team, faculty members and undergraduate and graduate students from various national and international universities specializing in Archaeology, Art History, Cultural Heritage Preservation and Restoration, Architecture, Anthropology, and History departments also contribute to the excavation work.

Parion has become one of Türkiye's most significant archaeological excavations in recent years

With its strong academic team and infrastructure, Parion has become a center for archaeological studies, producing numerous archaeologists and academicians. The Parion excavations have been considered among Türkiye's most important archaeological projects in recent years. Significant work is being carried out in six different areas of the ancient city, including the Necropolis, Roman Bath, Theater, Odeon, Agora/Shops, and drillings.

Scientific activities aimed at preserving portable and immovable cultural assets uncovered during the Parion excavations are conducted by expert conservators on the team. Activities aimed at preserving cultural assets and developing public awareness on this matter are also integrated into the excavation work.

Results are published in the "Parion Studies" series

The results of the excavations are published in the "Parion Studies" series, which holds international significance in the field of archaeology and is published by Ege Yayınları.

Furthermore, articles by team members are published in SCI-Exp, SSCI, and A&HCI-indexed journals and in journals indexed by TR, contributing to developing our country's cultural inventory. The Parion excavations are essential in advancing our nation's cultural heritage.
