The Science Communication Office, established under the Rectorate of Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU), will hold its first off-campus Science Café event on Friday, May 30, 2025, at 2:00 PM in the garden of the primary school in Kurtahmetli Neighborhood, Çarşamba district.
The event, titled “A Major Threat to Agriculture: Are You in Trouble with the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug?”, will feature Assoc. Prof. Dr. İslam Saruhan from the Department of Plant Protection at the Faculty of Agriculture, who will explain the impact of this pest on agriculture. The session will be moderated by Dr. Gülten Aslantürk, a faculty member at the Faculty of Communication.
Musical performances will be presented by Lecturer Mustafa Öcal (bağlama) from Samsun Vocational School and Baha Karpuz (guitar), a Faculty of Education, Department of Music Education student.
The event is being organized in cooperation with Çarşamba Vocational School of the Commodity Exchange, and with the support of the Çarşamba Municipality, Çarşamba Chamber of Agriculture, Çarşamba Association of Village Heads, and the Kurtahmetli Neighborhood Headman’s Office.
Science Cafés are science communication events conducted in informal learning environments that are open to audience interaction. Typically, they begin with a short 15–20 minute presentation by a speaker introducing the topic. After a brief intermission, the session continues with a question-and-answer and discussion segment. The total duration of the events generally ranges from one to one and a half hours.
