Academics from OMU Participate in TÜBİTAK Science Talks

Academics from Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) participate in science talks organized by TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye) at various schools. These include Prof. Dr. Osman Şahin, Dean of the Faculty of Theology; Prof. Dr. Yüksel Ardalı, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Environmental Engineering; Prof. Dr. Ergin Öztürk, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Zootechnics; Prof. Dr. Kamil Işık, Faculty of Science, Department of Biology; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Melek Özpiçak, Faculty of Science, Department of Biology; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emrah Ekmekçi, Faculty of Education, Department of Foreign Language Education; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali Dincer, School of Foreign Languages, Department of Translation and Interpretation; Assoc. "The Indispensable Value of Social Life: Honesty"

Prof. Dr. Osman Şahin, Dean of the Faculty of Theology, met with students at Yenice Mustafa Çakır Primary School (Samsun, Ayvacık) as part of the TÜBİTAK Science Talks.

The project aims to increase scientific awareness among primary and secondary education students and expand science communication to broader communities. During the talk, Prof. Dr. Şahin informed the students about the concept of honesty.

"Water Literacy"

Prof. Dr. Yüksel Ardalı, a member of the Faculty of Engineering's Environmental Engineering Department at Ondokuz Mayıs University, will meet with students at Canik Hasköy Middle School, Samsun Tekkeköy Büyüklü Primary School, Bafra Atatürk Anatolian High School, and Samsun Atakum Şehit Yüzbaşı Tunç Fidaner Middle School as part of the TÜBİTAK Science Talks. The topic of discussion will be "Water Literacy."

During the project, participants of various age groups will learn about the importance of water, its uses, water scarcity, high-risk areas, the impact of environmental degradation on water resources, water footprints, water treatment, and pollution prevention processes. They will also be taught to calculate water consumption using computer applications. The talk will cover consumption habits, integrated waste management, zero waste strategies, and how reducing emissions can help protect water resources. Additionally, the impact of climate change on water resources and future projections will be discussed. Finally, information will be provided on how consumers, producers, and managers can preserve this vital ecosystem service.

"The Contributions of Animals to Our Lives"

Prof. Dr. Ergin Öztürk, a faculty member of the Department of Zootechnics at the Faculty of Agriculture of Ondokuz Mayıs University, will engage with students in a talk titled "The Contributions of Animals to Our Lives," focusing on the theme of "Agricultural and Livestock Technologies." He will visit Gökçepınar Middle School (Samsun-Canik), Yatılı Bölge Middle School (Samsun-Vezirköprü), Göl Middle School (Samsun-Vezirköprü), Vezirköprü Imam Hatip Middle School (Samsun-Vezirköprü), Çukuryayla Middle School (Erzurum-Tekman), and Kopal Multi-Program Anatolian High School (Erzurum-Karaçoban).

As part of the project, students from kindergarten, primary, and secondary education will learn about the life cycles of animals, their responses to the environment and humans, and scientific studies conducted on animals. The goal of the project is to raise children's awareness about animals. It aims to convey scientific findings and experiences demonstrating the need to view animals not just as sources of production, hobby, or therapy, but as beings with whom we share our world.

"Biodiversity in Actinobacteria"

Prof. Dr. Kamil Işık, a faculty member of the Biology Department at the Faculty of Science, Ondokuz Mayıs University, will conduct a talk titled "Biodiversity in Actinobacteria" under the theme of "Biodiversity." This event will take place at Köksal Ersayın Anatolian High School (İlkadım-Samsun), Hasan Çelebi Multi-Program Anatolian High School (Salıpazarı-Samsun), and Recep Tanrıverdi Middle School (Atakum-Samsun).

The session aims to increase scientific communication and awareness by sharing knowledge about the concept of "biodiversity," specifically focusing on the discovery steps and potential of new actinobacteria under the "Biodiversity in Actinobacteria" theme.

"Following DNA: Clues to Biodiversity in Our Waters"

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Melek Özpiçak, a faculty member of the Biology Department at the Faculty of Science, Ondokuz Mayıs University, will conduct a talk titled "Following DNA: Clues to Biodiversity in Our Waters" as part of the TÜBİTAK Science Talks. This event will be held at Canik Anatolian High School (Samsun-Canik), Alptekin Anatolian High School (Amasya), and Kerimbey Primary School (Samsun-Tekkeköy).

The talk will focus on environmental DNA studies and their contributions to identifying biodiversity. The aim is to emphasize the importance of biological diversity and foster awareness in this field for future generations.

"Plant Biotechnology - GMOs

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Musa Kavas from the Department of Agricultural Biotechnology at the Faculty of Agriculture will meet with students for a talk titled "Transgenic Plants" at Osman Tural Imam Hatip Middle School (Alaçam, Samsun) and 19 Mayıs Middle School (Tekkeköy, Samsun).

In this talk, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Musa Kavas will share information about how genetically modified plants are developed using recombinant DNA techniques, which plants are produced in this manner, and their potential benefits and risks.

"Effective Technology Use in Foreign Language Education"

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emrah Ekmekçi, a faculty member of the Department of Foreign Language Education at the Faculty of Education, Ondokuz Mayıs University, will conduct a talk titled "Effective Technology Use in Foreign Language Education" at Canik Demirci Primary School as part of the TÜBİTAK Science Talks.

The discussion will focus on how students can effectively use technology while learning foreign languages. The event will introduce example websites and mobile applications, and discuss the integration of artificial intelligence tools in foreign language learning.

"Creating Online Learning Environments for Effective Foreign Language Learning Outside the Classroom"

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali Dincer, a faculty member of the Translation and Interpretation Department at the School of Foreign Languages, will hold a talk titled "Creating Online Learning Environments for Effective Foreign Language Learning Outside the Classroom" at Şeyhli Middle School (Samsun, Terme) and an Imam Hatip Middle School (Sinop, Türkeli).

The talk will emphasize how students can independently learn English in online environments outside of school and actively participate in their self-learning, featuring examples from websites and smartphone applications.

"Know Your Medicine, Protect Your Health: Rational Drug Use and Public Health

Dr. Büşra Dincer, a faculty member of the Department of Pharmacology at the Faculty of Pharmacy, will meet with students at Yaşar Doğu Primary School (Samsun, Kavak) and Çayırlı Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School (Erzincan, Çayırlı) for a talk titled "Know Your Medicine, Protect Your Health: Rational Drug Use and Public Health."

The planned talk will emphasize the importance of spreading rational drug use and reducing unnecessary medication use in terms of public health, drawing from Dr. Dincer's research in pharmacology, daily life examples of drug use, and participants' experiences.

"Mehmet Âkif's Life: His Environment and Friends"

Dr. Muhammed İkbâl Güler, a faculty member of the Department of Turkish Language and Literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Ondokuz Mayıs University, will conduct a talk titled "Mehmet Âkif's Life: His Environment and Friends" at Merzifon Atatürk Science and Art Center.

During the talk, Dr. Güler will share insights on the life of Mehmet Akif Ersoy, focusing on the 87th anniversary of his death, his role in writing the Turkish National Anthem, and his significance as a symbol of the Turkish nation's struggle for independence.

"The Role of Isotopes in Explaining Fish Migrations: The Case of the Pearl Mullet"

Dr. Semra Saygın, a research assistant at the Faculty of Science Biology Department, will also participate in the TÜBİTAK Science Talks, focusing on "Ecological Balance." Her talk, titled "The Role of Isotopes in Explaining Fish Migrations: The Case of the Pearl Mullet," will be held at Atatürk Anatolian High School (Sinop-Ayancık), Ayancık Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School (Sinop-Ayancık), Şehit Ersoy Gürsu Anatolian High School (Sinop-Boyabat), Dereköy Şehit Ümit Semerci Middle School (Samsun-Ondokuzmayıs), and Dereler Primary School (Samsun-Canik).

In this project, primary and secondary education students will be informed about fish's life cycles and migrations. Particular emphasis will be placed on the migration characteristics of the pearl mullet, a species found only in Lake Van, and the overall importance of fish migrations in maintaining ecological balance. The project aims to raise awareness among students about the significance of fish migrations and the role individuals play in preserving migration routes.
